02.07.2003 Ripley’s Game
I liked The Talented Mr. Ripley: good cast, good atmosphere, good story, maybe just a tad long. The whole warmish 50-ish Italian style of the movie gave it a very nice feel. So we decided to check out Ripley’s Game, also based on the book by Patricia Highsmith.
This movie tells the story of Jonathan Trevanny, who is forced into murdering someone by Tom Ripley. The fact that Jonathan suffers from terminal leukemia is used to pressure him into accepting the hitman job.
Although the location of the movie, based in Italy and Berlin, has a nice atmosphere, it doesn’t really come to life. Where the movie suffers the most is the lack of a decent part for the other actors, especially Ripley’s and Trevanny’s wives. The good performance of John Malkovich as Ripley saves the movie only to a certain extent. The storyline on the whole is strangly simplistic, and rather unbelievable.
I expected more, this movie was not very good. I like Malkovich better in that movie where he played that jewel thief.
